As an Emmy award winning, Werner Herzog mentored noise maker; I love working with sound be it the natural sounds of nature or creating a mood or a tone from scratch. I am happy to discuss the needs of any project, please contact me for further information and rates.
Artistic Statement:
Sound has always been a part of my life. As a small child I would visit my father, who worked as a radio journalist in the Brazilian section of the BBC World Service, and whenever I was allowed into the studio I would be completely enthralled by the strange changes in sound when experiencing the deadness of a sound proofed room. After that I was hooked on sound, experimenting in subsequent years with cassette tape recorders, electric guitars and film.
My background in creative sound and music drives my passion for filmmaking, noise making and storytelling. In doing so I approach filmmaking from a unique perspective, that of the soundtrack. In film sound makes up half of a film and yet is often overlooked by the visual senses. My work begins with the soundtrack, interweaving this with the visual narrative.
Podcasts and Sonic Branding:
In audio only story telling sound can act like the defining images of a novel, sparking pictures and textures in the mind. Podcasting is only beginning to make it’s mark as an art form and it is here that I approach the soundscape cinematically.
Audio storytelling is such a broad, fascinating outlet that covers various creative approaches and niches. This developing world of Podcasting is to me only beginning to make its mark as its own art form and it is here that I aim to explore my creative approach that is aurally cinematic, where the creative aspect of sound design and composition are just as important as the stories themselves.
Creative Sound for Feature Films:
In the Emmy winning HBO documentary It Will Be Chaos, my objective for the sound design was to craft a soundscape that connected not only the two main threads of the story but also added textures that represented the physical and emotional experiences of the characters. The process was a thorough collaboration between picture and sound often leading to revisions/re-edits as the project developed.
My process involved working with only natural sounds manipulating elements such as the wind, the water along with the grieving screams and wails of the shipwreck survivors. By effecting and layering these elements tones and sonic washes wereI designed culminating in an outcome that feels subtle yet natural and organic. When placed on sequences such as the port scene, these sonic beds add a sense of surrealism to the drama of the unfolding chaos.
Commercial and Online Content Approach:
In the commercial, editorial digital world the online video and print world is going through a complete revolution of how content is delivered. Publications such as The New York Times, Vogue magazine, online only platforms like Nowness.com and Haute Couture fashion brands are relying more and more on video content; some of it editorial, some of it commercial and always artistic in nature. This new hybrid video/print industry is an area where I have formed a distinct niche in providing not only highest quality audio and sound design but also I have contributed to the creative aspect of the videos from production to camerawork to idea development.
Born in the UK, former resident of Edinburgh, Scotland, I currently reside in Los Angeles with my partner Paola and work either remotely anywhere or physically in LA and New York City.
